COLFO has now published our Arms Act Consultation Guide to help you submit your views on what the firearm laws of the future should be.
You can find the guide via the link below as well as a button to the submission page on the Ministry of Justice website.
If you have ever complained about how Police and previous governments have treated licensed firearm owners after 2019, you need to submit and share this widely. If we stand together as a community, we have the chance to ensure the laws we must obey are both practical and effective. Together we are strong and this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
If you are wondering; "Why should I submit, changes won't affect me" then this next message is for you.
Anti-gun lobby groups are rallying support to bring in further restrictions that will govern how you and your family legally own and use firearms. These changes include:
Doubling the cost of your firearms license and paperwork by halving the license period to 5 years.
Stopping your kids from learning safe firearm handling by banning anyone under 10 from using firearms, even under close supervision, and increasing the minimum age for a firearms license to 18.
Calling for the destruction of firearms by requiring collectors to deactivate their pieces permanently.
They have also admitted on-air that they would like to see Australia's gun laws set the standard for ours. This would mean:
Restricting the number of firearms you are allowed to own to 5 firearms for hunters
Banning firearms larger than .308 caliber as they are "high power sniper rifles"
Banning pump action, semi-auto, and straight-pull rifles as they are "rapid fire guns"
If you think it cannot happen here, remember we once thought the same about a firearms register and semi-auto centrefire rifles. We have already seen calls to ban pump-action shotguns following the Auckland shooting by a criminal wearing an ankle monitor.
COLFO has been fighting on behalf of licensed firearm owners since 1996. We are a non-profit and rely on memberships and donations from our supporters. If you can donate to the fight to protect your firearm rights, please consider doing so here. If you cannot donate money, please consider sharing this message with your contacts, on social media, and on hunting blogs and forums.
Together, we are strong and it's time to make our voices heard to the government and ensure the future of our sport is protected for the next generation of licensed firearm owners.
