Just in today from Justice. This is your chance to contribute to changing the law.
| Earlier this week, the Government announced it will undertake public consultation on the rewrite of the Arms Act 1983. The public consultation will be led by the Ministry of Justice and will take place between 13 January and 28 February 2025. During this time, we invite everyone to have their say on the rewrite of the Act. We want to hear your thoughts on what works, what doesn’t, and what needs to change. You will be able to do this through making a submission. On 13 January, we will: · send a follow up email advising you that public consultation is open · update the Firearms reform webpage with information on how to make your submission · upload a discussion document and a summary version to the webpage. The new Firearms reform webpage will be the primary source of information about the public consultation and the overall firearms reform work. You can find out more at www.justice.govt.nz/justice-sector-policy/key-initiatives/firearms-reform We have developed the discussion document to help you make your submission. It breaks down the Act into seven themes and provides helpful questions. We have also developed a summary version, which is shorter and available in English, Arabic, Bengali, Somali and Urdu languages. The summary version will be available in accessible formats. About the firearm reform The Arms Act rewrite is Phase 4 of the Government’s commitment to reform New Zealand’s firearms regulatory system. The four phases are: · Phase 1 – Effective enforcement (improvements to Firearms Prohibition Orders) · Phase 2 – Regulating shooting clubs and shooting ranges · Phase 3 – Institutional arrangements for effective and efficient regulation · Phase 4 – A systematic rewrite to modernise the Arms Act 1983. The overall reform will deliver a firearms regulatory system that: · imposes controls that protect individuals and the public from firearms-related harm · supports the safe possession and use of firearms and other weapons for legitimate purposes, such as sports, hunting, collecting, and pest control. You can read more about this work on the Firearms reform webpage. Please contact us at firearms@justice.govt.nz if you have questions about the public consultation. Kindly note the team will be away until 6 January. Regards,Firearms Team |
